Osiecznica Commune Head Waldemar Nalazek, like many other local-government leaders, received a mandatory pay raise. As “Business Insider” reports:

The obligation to accept a pay raise follows directly from the law. It states that the remuneration of a mayor [ale także burmistrza czy wójta – przyp. istotne.pl] must amount to at least 80% of the maximum applicable to that position.

But W. Nalazek—in contrast to many of his professional colleagues—asked councillors for the said raise to be the smallest possible.

Why? The head of the municipal government decided that he had to act this way, given the situation both in the country and in local government. In an interview with istotne.pl, he added that his conscience told him that it was not the time for pay raises.

He also stressed that, in his view, it was still a significant increase, because previously he earned PLN 10,150 gross, while now he will receive PLN 15,500 gross.
