Poland’s largest cable network, UPC, which provides cable television, Internet access and telephone services, has been sold. The transaction will be finalized in 2022. Liberty Global, its American owner, has decided to sell UPC Polska to the French Iliad Group for PLN 7 billion.
The Iliad Group is, among other things, the owner of the Play network operating in Poland. Thousands of people in Bolesławiec use UPC services. The merger of UPC and Play will make it possible to increase investment in the network-access market.
As reported by wirtualnemedia.pl:
- The acquisition of UPC Polska reflects Play and iliad’s determination to invest in mobile and broadband networks and next-generation services. This transaction is driven by the desire to accelerate investment in the fiber-optic network and contributes to the fulfillment of the long-term ambition to develop nationwide connectivity in Poland. We hope that our commitment will positively influence the digital transformation of the Polish economy and benefit consumers and businesses, including through new comprehensive offers – says Thomas Reynaud, president of the Iliad Group.
The UPC network had already cooperated with the Play network. The mobile services offered by UPC used the coverage of the Play network.
