Office:

We often hear about cases of driving the wrong way on expressways. Despite appropriate signs and the layout of the carriageway itself, which forces drivers to travel in the correct direction, some motorists break the rules and create a huge danger in road traffic, both for others and for themselves.

What action has been taken?

General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways: “We have drawn on solutions used in Austria, Germany, Slovakia and Croatia. Distinctive large yellow signs bearing the words ‘STOP. Wrong direction’ and a hand symbol with a no-entry sign pictogram placed on it have already been installed on the ramp of the Głogów Południe interchange on the S3, as well as at the Świlcza interchange on the S19. New signs have also appeared on the A4 motorway at the Opole Zachód, Rzeszów Północ and Przemyśl interchanges, and before the Polish-Ukrainian border in Korczowa, where drivers waiting for clearance and turning around before the border have been observed.

The authority explains:

The information signs that have been installed are not road signs; they are intended to reinforce the existing traffic organisation. It is worth recalling that the placement of road signs is regulated by the so-called Red Book, which is a regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure on detailed technical conditions for road signs and signals, road traffic safety devices and the conditions for their placement on roads (Journal of Laws of 2019, item 2311, as amended).

More signs to come

Officials: “In the near future, such information signs will appear, among other places, at the Patriotów interchange on the S2 in Warsaw, at the Wypędy, Paszków and Mszczonów interchanges on the S8, at most interchanges on the S3 between Szczecin and Zielona Góra, on the Wałcz bypass along the S10, and at several interchanges on the S1 and S52 near Bielsko-Biała.
