The book is not available in brick-and-mortar bookstores; it can only be purchased through the author’s Facebook page. Marcin Szymczak will donate the sales proceeds to the construction of a child and adolescent psychiatry ward at the Children’s Health Center in Warsaw.
Work on the book lasted six months. Monika Pluszczewicz handled its publication, transcription, proofreading and typesetting. The photographs come from the author’s private archive.
“Working on Marcin’s texts was an extraordinary experience,” says Monika Pluszczewicz. “It began with emails we sent to each other. Marcin wrote about everything in them: his feelings and dreams, and he recalled the old days. They were fantastic to read because his style is very clear, light and amusing, while at the same time getting to the heart of reality and the problems that people with disabilities have to face every day. The book is a record of our correspondence and Marcin’s reflections, which I tried to arrange into a reasonably coherent whole. His loved ones—his sister Justyna and his assistant Marek—provided comments on the text. I think everyone should read this book. It allows you to see another world. Different because it is bygone and magical. Different because it is observed from the perspective of a person confined to a wheelchair, trapped in a ‘defective avatar,’ while also being a very bright and perceptive person,” says the publisher.
