During the 10th edition of the Lubimyczytać readers’ poll at the book fair in Poznań, Sławomir Gortych’s novel “Schronisko, które spowijał mrok” won the prestigious title of “Crime Novel of the Year 2024.” Readers appreciated not only the intriguing plot and skilful suspense-building, but also the novel’s unique atmosphere, which lingers in the memory for a long time.

The audience thanked him with applause when the writer addressed his partner Grzegorz in a special way.

– In a country where the president believes that I am not a human being, I feel all the more obliged to thank my partner Grzesiu, and I hope that the time will come when you will be my husband – said Sławomir Gortych. We wrote about this exceptional event in the article “The Author of the Crime Novel of the Year Proposed at the Book Fair”.

Sławomir Gortych, a writer who draws inspiration from the Karkonosze Mountains, appeals to the tastes of Polish readers with his work. The combination of Poles’ passion for dark stories and the picturesque landscapes of the Karkonosze Mountains has contributed to his success with readers.

On the popular TVN breakfast show, Gortych spoke about the surprising similarities between being a doctor and being a writer. Both callings require close observation, analysis of human behaviour and empathy, making it possible to create authentic and convincing narratives.

As a graduate of I Liceum Ogólnokształcące in Bolesławiec, he is a frequent guest invited to the city for author meetings.

A testament to Gortych’s writing prowess is the fact that even an extremely homophobic social media profile founded by councillor Łukasz Molak promotes him as a crime-fiction author. This proves that even homophobes and football hooligans – numerous followers of the profile – can appreciate good crime novels.
