The purpose of the journey was to improve the ability to analyze and assess the impact of terrain on conducting various types and forms of combat operations, as well as to deepen knowledge of the historical conditions and military use during World War II of objects and routes of an operational-tactical nature. In addition to history lessons and analysis of the operations of units at that time, the contemporary possibilities for conducting selected tactical operations by the regiment’s subunits in the analyzed area and under specific combat conditions were determined.

Each stage of the journey also provided an opportunity for participants to improve their topographic orientation skills and concluded with a discussion and review of the key aspects of the topics addressed.

The individual stages of the journey were supplemented by an introduction to the history of the areas analyzed and military facilities dating from past wars. Among the latter, participants had the opportunity to learn about the complex of fortifications at the confluence of the Wieprz and Vistula rivers—the Dęblin Fortress—visit the Museum of the Air Force in Dęblin, and analyze the final battle of the 1939 September Campaign, the Battle of Kock. A visit to the cemetery where the remains of 83 soldiers killed in the battle are buried provided an opportunity to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers and their commander, General Franciszek Kleeberg.

At the end of the journey, the artillerymen visited the Józef Piłsudski Museum in Sulejówek. In addition to the history of the Marshal, the artillerymen were particularly interested in the period of the 1920 Battle of Warsaw, owing to the regiment’s inheritance of the name of one of the co-authors of the Warsaw battle plan and the first Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Army, General Tadeusz Jordan-Rozwadowski.

The historical-geographical journey undertaken by soldiers of the 23rd Artillery Regiment was an interesting and valuable experience. Besides providing an opportunity to expand their historical knowledge, it also offered a chance to improve their tactical skills and knowledge.
