Road authorities:

Unfortunately, some road users often forget this, and their recklessness can lead to tragedy.

Several such incidents occurred recently, including on the Lublin bypass and the S12 expressway in Piaski. A camera recorded a cyclist travelling between the Lublin Felin and Lublin Tatary interchanges.

Office:

The young man was cycling along the hard shoulder and the exit lane, and, as if that were not enough, he was wearing headphones. After stopping on the exit lane, he did not leave the expressway and continued on.

The incident occurred on 15 February. Interestingly, on the same day cameras spotted a lorry on the S12 expressway near the Piaski Zachód interchange. The tractor-trailer driver was reversing, putting not only his own life at risk, but also the lives of other road users.

What should you remember?

  • Cyclists may not use expressways or motorways! The same rule applies to pedestrians, agricultural tractors and horse-drawn carriages.
  • It is forbidden to stop a vehicle on a high-speed road, reverse or make a U-turn! Some people need to attend to bodily needs or want, for example, to take a photo. The hard shoulder is not for that! Designated locations, such as Traveller Service Areas, are provided for these purposes. The only exceptions to this rule are: a vehicle breakdown, being stopped by the Police or another authorised service, an emergency on the road (e.g. an accident), or stopping at a toll plaza on a motorway.
  • If a collision or breakdown occurs, the vehicle should, where possible, be moved onto the hard shoulder and its hazard lights switched on. In such a situation, put on a high-visibility vest and carefully place a warning triangle 100 metres from the vehicle. Move off the carriageway as quickly as possible, behind the safety barriers. Call the road service on 112 or 19111.
  • If you witness an accident and the appropriate services are already at the scene, do not slow down; look ahead and concentrate on driving your car!
