The Bolesławiec Youth City Council published a post on its Facebook profile concerning the fence at Wiadukt Plaza in Bolesławiec:
Over the past few days, we have noticed that a fence has been installed at the Bolesławiec Skatepark. This raises the question: a fence to keep whom out?
From the very beginning, the city authorities built this place with young people in mind. To this day, the skatepark, pump track and climbing walls serve their purpose, and we are proud of our young people that this beautiful facility has not been vandalized, covered in graffiti or neglected. For as long as we can remember, young people have struggled with a problem that the Bolesławiec authorities apparently find difficult to solve... We lack a place where we can meet, spend an evening together or organize a small party. There are so few benches on Bobrowa Path that we could count them on the fingers of one hand; our shelter is already old and badly damaged, and, what is more, people live around it who constantly call the services because of nighttime noise.
Mr Mayor, Councillors! Where are young people supposed to go?
The reason given for closing the skatepark was bottles, but you failed to mention that the rubbish was there because the bins were full, not because young people are dirty. You installed a fence that cost more than five large waste containers and their maintenance. Every one of you was young once, and you seem to have forgotten that, besides studying and achieving success, we need free time, some relaxation and a chance to forget our everyday problems. It is a pity that nobody thought about this.
Let us recall. During the November session of the City Council, the Mayor of Bolesławiec said sarcastically that there was great interest in the Wiadukt Plaza area. He added that on November 16, the director of the Municipal Sports and Recreation Centre informed him that, while cleaning the facility in question, they had collected... 150 vodka bottles, 280 beer bottles and 102 cans.
This amount of rubbish appeared at Wiadukt Plaza within approximately two days. Acts of vandalism also occurred.
How did this happen?
During the pandemic and restrictions, the area by the viaduct became a popular spot for various celebrations, such as birthdays, name-day parties and so on. The police even received information that a birthday party for one hundred people was to take place at Wiadukt Plaza.
The result? The facility has been fenced off—partially, for now. As Paweł Dul, director of the Municipal Sports and Recreation Centre in Bolesławiec, informed us, the project has not yet been completed. (The fence is scheduled to be ready by December 22.) The cost of the work is PLN 92,000.
In winter, the skatepark will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.. In summer, it is supposed to remain open longer. And if it turns out that nobody consumes alcohol there anymore, the gates will be open all night. What is more, surveillance is planned for next year.
What do you think?
