Antoni Filist, a resident of Starzyńskiego Street, has no doubt that the Starzyńskiego housing estate (formerly the 40th Anniversary estate) lacks a grocery supermarket. “People want a store where prices would be lower, and this is their initiative, which I have taken up,” he says. “We have collected nearly 500 signatures in support of building such a supermarket,” he stresses.

City Council member Hubert Prabucki also sees the need for a grocery discount store in the Starzyńskiego housing estate. In his opinion, there is social demand for this type of store. Many elderly people live on the estate; they do not have cars and cannot shop at supermarkets located in other parts of the city. Council member Prabucki has already raised the issue of the lack of a supermarket in the Starzyńskiego housing estate during a City Council session.

Not everyone wants a supermarket

The owners of grocery stores located on the estate are not enthusiastic about the social initiative to build a supermarket. The new supermarket would offer goods at lower prices and would certainly take some customers away from the other stores. Some residents of the estate are also concerned. In their opinion, traffic on Starzyńskiego and Kilińskiego streets would increase, making the area dangerous, especially for children and elderly people.

Will the supermarket be built?

The grocery supermarket would be located on Starzyńskiego Street, next to the guarded car park. It is currently land owned by the State Treasury and administered by the Military Housing Agency. The city wants to acquire the plot. This would make it possible to change the spatial development plan, after which a retail and service facility could be built at this location. The area where, among other things, a supermarket could be built is currently designated for detached residential development. The site will be provided with utilities by the end of the year.

Will the residents of the Starzyński housing estate have “their own” supermarket? “Everything is heading in the right direction,” says Antoni Filist. The city responded favorably to the social initiative to build a supermarket and has already begun efforts to acquire the plot.
