The new modular hospital in Bolesławiec is ready to admit patients. Efficient cooperation between the regional government, local authorities and the management of the county hospital in Bolesławiec made it possible to build and equip the new facility within 3.5 months. Thanks to the involvement of the regional government, the investment, worth more than PLN 8 million, was financed entirely from European Union funds. After the pandemic ends, the modular hospital will continue to serve patients, for example as a long-term care facility.
“The county hospital in Bolesławiec has been on the front line in the fight against coronavirus since the beginning of the epidemic and is one of the main centers treating COVID-19 patients in Lower Silesia. Construction of the container hospital began in the summer and was one of the elements of preparations to combat the next wave of the epidemic. As the regional government, we financed the construction and equipment of the hospital in full, allocating PLN 8.2 million from European Union funds for this purpose,” says Marshal Cezary Przybylski of Bezpartyjni Samorządowcy.
The modular hospital will treat people infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The decision to build it was made in the summer and was one of the elements of preparing the region’s healthcare system for the next wave of the coronavirus epidemic. Construction work began in mid-August and was completed on October 1. During this time, a building with an area of almost 1,300 sq m and capacity for 65 beds, including 12 ventilator beds, was finished and equipped.
The hospital is modern and provides comfortable conditions for patients as well as comprehensive facilities for medical staff. One-, two- and three-bed rooms with bathrooms are standard equipment at the hospital. Patients will be treated with the most effective therapies available on the medical market by a qualified, experienced team of nearly 60 people. After the pandemic ends, the modular hospital, which is a full-size hospital building, will admit patients without infections, for example as a long-term care facility.
“The container hospital at SP ZOZ in Bolesławiec will increase the number of beds in the voivodeship by 65, including 12 ventilator beds. I am pleased that the number of COVID beds in hospitals across the region is growing and that the regional government is contributing to this. This is extremely important. It should also be emphasized that, thanks to the new container hospital, the pediatric ward will return to operation at SP ZOZ, followed in the future by other hospital services that have so far been suspended because of the demand for beds for COVID-19 patients,” says Deputy Marshal Marcin Krzyżanowski.
The county hospital in Bolesławiec is one of the few institutions in Poland to provide comprehensive medical services related to the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19. It has its own diagnostic imaging department, a PCR molecular biology laboratory, 12 field collection points for coronavirus tests, three swab-collection ambulances, an isolation facility, a temporary hospital and an infectious diseases ward.
The facility is one of the main centers treating COVID-19 patients in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. It treats the largest number of patients in the region who are on ventilators or non-invasive mechanical ventilation, as well as those receiving CPAP and high-flow nasal oxygen therapy. ZOZ in Bolesławiec also has access to modern pharmacological therapies that help patients, enabling effective treatment. So far, the hospital has admitted more than 1,200 people from across Lower Silesia.
