Monday’s exhibition at Forum is the result of art activities by students of the Special Education School Complex in the Graphic Arts Studio of the Bolesławiec Youth Cultural Centre. Since September this year, art classes have been held at the Youth Cultural Centre as part of cooperation with teachers from the County Special Education School Complex in Bolesławiec, Urszula Krzywdzińska and Monika Piotrowska.
“The choice of venue,” says Magdalena Konieczna, an art instructor at the Youth Cultural Centre, “was dictated by the workshop facilities. At the Cultural Centre, we have an art studio equipped with the necessary materials, tools and supplies. The educational programme was adapted to the abilities and needs of young people with mild and moderate disabilities.”
“I focused on the creative process rather than its result in the form of an artwork,” the instructor adds. “Nevertheless, very interesting works were created by applying various artistic techniques and materials.”
The exhibition will feature painting, drawing, frottage (a technique for transferring the texture of various objects, such as wood, fabric or leaves, onto paper by placing the paper on the object and rubbing it firmly with a pencil*), collage (an artistic technique involving the formation of a composition from various materials and substances*), stamping and batik (a painting technique involving the successive application of wax and immersion of the fabric in dye, which colours only the areas not covered by a layer of wax*).
“Activities through art are one of the most attractive forms of therapy, especially for people with disabilities,” explains Magdalena Konieczna. “Intellectual disability does not go hand in hand with impaired sensitivity. On the contrary, the sensitivity of people with intellectual disabilities can be extraordinary; it simply needs to be brought out. Art provides a space in which everyone can fulfil themselves. It gives young people with intellectual disabilities a chance to discover new values within themselves and present themselves to others as talented and interesting people. The problems of people with disabilities still remain marginal and incomprehensible to society,” Magdalena Konieczna stresses.
