Everyone’s skin undergoes constant changes from birth through old age. Its condition is affected by climatic conditions, the action of free radicals, genetic predispositions, nutrition, proper care, as well as a person’s overall physical and mental state.
Stress affects us every day – it causes nervousness and insomnia. It contributes to overweight, digestive disorders, and reduced immunity. It is also the cause of many skin problems.
Prolonged tension affects the body like corrosion processes affect steel—it destroys it slowly but consistently. In a stressed body, the number of red blood cells and T lymphocytes, which are responsible for fighting all kinds of microorganisms, drops drastically. That is why stressed people are often plagued by cold sores, skin eruptions appear, and the symptoms of common acne intensify.
When defending themselves against stress, skin cells quickly use up the elements essential for proper functioning (micronutrients, mineral salts, vitamins, and magnesium). When discomfort and a feeling of tightness in the skin are strongly felt, this is a warning sign that the skin has already depleted its energy reserves and is unable to defend itself against stress.
Frequent prolonged stress and physical exhaustion cause wrinkles to form around the eyes and on the forehead, as well as swelling and “dark circles” under the eyes. Dry skin becomes even drier, and a fine network of blood vessels may appear on it. Under the influence of stress, combination skin may turn into oily skin. It is therefore possible to speak of the emergence, alongside oily, dry and combination skin, of a new skin type – stressed skin.
A wonderful effect of relaxing the skin and reducing signs of fatigue can be achieved by performing a facial self-massage every day. It can be done while applying cream (preferably one containing vitamins). Remember that hand movements must be deliberate and very gentle. You can trace “eights” around the eyes, temples and between the eyebrows. Use stroking movements to lift the cheek and neck muscles. Aromatherapy baths with your favorite oil, bath liquid or salts provide excellent relaxation for the whole body. Scents such as lavender, vanilla and chocolate are relaxing. It is a good idea to create the right atmosphere and mood. Dim lighting and candlelight have a calming effect. Favorite music and flowers can bring great pleasure to the senses of hearing and smell. All treatments will be effective only when our psyche is not blocked by stress.
