The “Spartakiad for wheelchair users with disabilities” continues the “Ceramic Wheelchair Cross,” which FAR organized annually from 2015.
In response to the high level of interest in the event among people with disabilities, additional sports disciplines were added. This year, for the first time, participants could compete not only in the wheelchair Cross, but also in disciplines such as archery, boules, the labyrinth, slalom and basketball shooting. All disciplines were divided into age categories so that children with disabilities could also take part in the sporting competition.
Since 1988, the Active Rehabilitation Foundation has promoted sport as a form of rehabilitation. It is an organization created by people with disabilities for people with disabilities. FAR instructors, who use wheelchairs themselves, demonstrate and teach independence by their own example, as well as how to overcome barriers—both architectural and mental.
“Through events such as the Spartakiad, we give people who need it most the opportunity to compete in sport,” said Adam Bartków, FAR Representative for the Lower Silesian region.
In addition to promoting a healthy lifestyle and participation in sport, the Spartakiad also has a social rehabilitation dimension, as it challenges stereotypes about people with disabilities. “The Spartakiad was also able to run smoothly thanks to the help of volunteers and donors,” Mr Adam said.
The Spartakiad was attended by 53 competitors from not only Bolesławiec County, but also across the Lower Silesian and Opole voivodeships.
