VAT changes from 1 July: cheaper tampons and food, more expensive seafood

Large retail chains are announcing which products will become more expensive and which will become cheaper in connection with changes to the value added tax (VAT). The new VAT rate matrix is the tax system reform announced by the government.

Increased VAT – 23% from 1 July – on prawns, octopuses and mussels. Sanitary pads, tampons and nappies will become cheaper—their rate will fall from 8% to 5%. Most food products will also become cheaper, as the VAT rate has been reduced from 23% to 8% and 5%.

Products we will buy more cheaply:

Tropical fruits and citrus fruits
Bread and biscuits
Nuts (various types)
Instant soups, homogenised food
Mustard and spices
Children’s products: nappies, dummies, car seats
Hygiene products (sanitary pads and tampons)

What we will buy at higher prices:

Seafood: lobsters, octopuses, prawns, oysters, caviar
Ice used for food and refrigeration purposes
Firewood

Cheaper tampons, more expensive octopuses. VAT changes take effect today!
