On Tuesday, via Twitter, the Head of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister Michał Dworczyk announced that the government had changed the VAT tax matrix. As “Gazeta Prawna” reports:
He gave examples of the changes: the rate on pacifiers and baby strollers will fall from 23% to 8%, while the rate on octopuses and caviar will rise from 8% to 23%.
What will become cheaper?
Gazetaprawna.pl:
The simplifications are intended to cover, among other things, many food products. Bread and biscuits, which are currently subject to three rates—5%, 8% and 23%—will be covered by the lowest, 5% rate. [...]
Tropical fruits, citrus fruits, pistachios, almonds and similar products will, for example, be subject to a single 5% rate. Spices are to be taxed at the 8% rate.
What will become more expensive?
VAT on seafood—octopuses, lobsters, crabs, langoustines, shrimp, oysters and mussels—will rise from 5% to 23%.
In an interview with Superstacja, PiS senator Jan Maria Jackowski noted that the aforementioned octopuses had been an electoral “nail in the coffin” for Platforma Obywatelska.
Good news for e-reading fans
The Ministry of Finance planned for a 5% rate on e-books and an 8% rate on digital newspapers and magazines to take effect on June 1 this year, replacing the 23% tax. Thus, the rates on e-books and digital newspapers and magazines would be aligned with those applicable to traditional books and print media.
