Germany has not yet declared a state of emergency across the country or closed its borders. However, individual cities are introducing restrictions.
Görlitz Mayor Octavian Ursu, like the authorities in other Saxon cities, introduced a quarantine order in his city on 23 March. “Leaving home is permitted only for important reasons (commuting to work, medical appointments and shopping for everyday necessities). It is still possible to go outside, but—not in groups, except for people living in the same household. We must all help stop the spread of the coronavirus,” said Octavian Ursu, Mayor of Görlitz.
You may also leave home to exercise outdoors or go for a walk. But only alone or, alternatively, with someone you live with.
Police officers are patrolling the streets of the city bordering Zgorzelec. They are supported by Bundeswehr soldiers.
The number of infected people in Görlitz has begun to rise sharply. It is 28. More than 120 others may be infected and are in hospital awaiting test results. Across Saxony, 865 people are infected.
The ban on leaving home is in effect until 5 April.
