Today at 10:00, a 51.4-kilometre section of the A-4 motorway was opened. The new motorway connects Zgorzelec with Krzyżowa. The official opening was performed by Deputy Prime Minister Grzegorz Schetyna in the presence of Minister of Infrastructure Cezary Grabarczyk, officials from the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, and representatives of the motorway contractors.
The motorway opening ceremony took place in the Żarska Wieś area. A police car was the first vehicle to enter the new road. It was followed by a convoy of cars led by two trucks. National media followed the motorway’s opening. Journalists from Germany were also present.
The new motorway section cost more than €317 million. The new route will significantly improve transit links with Germany. Residents of Bolesławiec hope that the motorway will lead to fewer fatal accidents. They also hope that travelling through Bolesławiec—particularly along national road no. 4 from the direction of Zgorzelec—will take much less time than before. The motorway’s opening is not such good news for some businesses. This applies primarily to owners of roadside hotels and restaurants, producers and sellers of ceramics, and owners and managers of petrol stations. For them, the new motorway means less traffic and lower turnover.
