Why is blood so important?

Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre in Wałbrzych:

We currently need every blood group because hospitals' demand for this precious gift is growing. The situation in our area is quite difficult because many people are ill. The National Oncology Council identifies Lower Silesia as the area most burdened by cancer.

The Centre adds:

Blood is also needed in cases of massive haemorrhage (accidents) and during transplants. Every day, approximately 100 people come to donate blood at the RCKiK and as part of mobile teams. We have to issue much more—sometimes even twice as many donations.

Who can become a blood donor?

Blood may be donated by a person who:

  • is aged 18–65 and has an identity document with a photograph and address
  • has an appropriate body weight: over 50 kg
  • has not had jaundice, syphilis, psoriasis or diabetes
  • has not undergone surgery, endoscopic procedures, tattooing, ear piercing or piercing of other body parts within the last six months
  • does not have serious diseases of the circulatory, digestive, nervous, respiratory or urinary systems.

Importantly, women cannot donate blood during menstruation or for three days after it ends.
