– Nina Grugl, a Bolesławiec resident, has a real edge despite her young age – says artist Magdalena Konieczna, curator of Nina’s exhibition. The very subject of “Housewife” is controversial, especially since the paintings juxtapose fabulously colourful hens with beautiful, attractive women.
The idea behind “Housewives” is simple. Nina Grugl shows in her works that the stereotypical housewife—a woman, most often a mother, whom everyone sees as an unattractive, neglected and unambitious person—is beautiful. Nina says that although she is not a housewife herself, she admires such women and would like men not to view homemakers in only one stereotypical way. She wants them to notice their beauty, richness and depth. She does not want to start a revolution; she only wants to emphasise the attractiveness of housewives.
Nina’s favourite painting is the acrylic “Instead of Eggs, the Hen Hatches Fairy Tales”. The woman she painted there is delicate, sensual and romantic. Juxtaposing such an image with the stereotype of a housewife is highly controversial and therefore appealing.
Nina Grugl is currently studying at an art secondary school in Cieplice, specialising in artistic glass. Her artworks are full of colour and light. She has a free, decisive line. In addition to the “Housewife” series, she also exhibited sketches, portraits and figure studies.
She exhibited her works as part of the “Presentations” project. This project has been running since 2007 and includes a series of exhibitions by participants of the Graphic Arts Studio at the MDK, as well as young people living in Bolesławiec County. The project aims to present and promote the work of particularly talented young people. The project is coordinated by Magdalena Konieczna, whom young artists can contact.
