We are publicizing the matter at the request of our Reader, who wrote in an email to the editorial office: “Today I was [w niedzielę 12 lipca – przyp. red.] at our swimming pools—or rather, I wanted to be, because unfortunately I found the door locked. In mid-July, during the holidays, on a sunny day without a drop of rain, on a Sunday—the only safe swimming area is closed. I ask: whose decision is this?” She added: “Why, after a whole week of work, should I take my child to smelly gravel pits? In my opinion, this is a scandal!”

Dariusz Jośko, director of the Municipal Sports and Recreation Centre, admits that the pools are sometimes closed due to a lack of visitors. “Today [13 July—editor’s note] I was at the pools. At 11:00, only one person was swimming. The safety of those in the water is overseen by 10 lifeguards,” explains the MOSiR director. “If at 13:00 there are no more than three people and nothing suggests that more will come, we decide to close the facility. This results from our experience, not from malice.”

The reason for this situation is simple: money. “We cannot remain fully ready; the Municipal Gmina will not pay us for that,” admits Dariusz Jośko. He adds that the number of people swimming in the pools depends on the weather: “We have noticed a certain pattern. Two sunny days are enough for people to start coming to the outdoor pools in greater numbers.”
