The incident occurred during the night of December 3–4 in Ołobok (Osiecznica commune). Reader:

The wolves dug underneath the fence with electric wires and killed all the animals.

The fallow deer were kept on a plot of more than half a hectare, enclosed by a two-meter-high forest fence with two electric wires.

The incident was reported to the police. As the Reader informed us, the officers referred the person who reported it to the environmental protection authorities. The officials will probably pay compensation in this case because—as our informant adds—the fallow deer “are subject to different conditions than sheep or cattle and do not have to be locked up at night.”

Let us recall that a similar incident occurred at the beginning of November in Wykroty. Wolves attacked sheep in the village, on Główna Street. The owner found the dead animals on the morning of November 2. Seven sheep were already dead.

The predators probably got through the fence via a hole dug underneath it. Only skeletons remained of two sheep. Not even a trace remained of the lambs. One of the animals had its throat bitten, but was still showing signs of life and was successfully saved.

The owners of the sheep killed by the wolves learned that they would not receive compensation for the damage caused by the wolves. Why? As we read on the website of the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Wrocław, which is where such incidents should be reported:

Compensation is not payable, among other things, for damage caused by wolves, bears or lynxes to livestock left, during the period from sunset to sunrise, without direct supervision. In disputed cases concerning the amount of compensation for damage caused, among other things, by wolves, decisions are issued by ordinary courts.

That was also the response received by the owners of the sheep killed by the wolves. The owner of the dead animals, Mrs. Monika, asked at the time, unable to hide her bitterness:

So am I or my husband supposed to sleep in the sheepfold, risking our lives?

and added:

The situation is becoming serious because wolves are being seen in our area more and more often, not only in the forest but also in the village. A few days ago, at 8 a.m., they were by the fence of a neighbor who also raises animals. Wolves are protected, they cause major losses among farmers, and the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Wrocław does not want to pay compensation for losses suffered among livestock.
