The tragedy occurred before 6:00 a.m. on Route 4, at the famous curve of death before Czerna. The 22-year-old driver of a Ford Escort was travelling from the direction of Zgorzelec. On a bend in the road, he was overtaking a Mercedes van. A Volkswagen Transporter with a car trailer was approaching from the opposite direction. A collision occurred. The Escort driver died at the scene. His car had registration plates from Zgorzelec.

Firefighters were the first to arrive at the accident scene. They attempted to resuscitate the driver using a semi-automatic defibrillator (a device for restoring heart function, carried by the Bolesławiec fire service). Unfortunately, the young man did not survive the accident.
