1,275 is the number of infections detected in Poland in 2018. According to the National Institute of Public Health – National Institute of Hygiene, the number of newly detected infections exceeds 1,000 every year in our country. From the introduction of testing, that is, from the mid-1980s to April 30, 2019, 24,303 HIV infections were detected, AIDS was diagnosed in 3,692 people and 1,418 deaths were recorded.

In Lower Silesia, from January to July 2019, 92 HIV carriers and 7 people with AIDS were registered. Every day in Poland, an average of 3 people learn that they are infected. The vast majority of infections occur through sexual contact. Despite this, estimates indicate that no more than one in ten adults in Poland has taken an HIV test. This is significantly fewer than in other European countries. As many as several thousand people may be living with the virus in our country without realizing it.

Meanwhile, the test is very simple and trouble-free. At 30 Consultation and Diagnostic Points (PKD) co-financed by the National AIDS Centre, an agency of the Minister of Health, qualified counsellors are waiting for people who want to take a test. In addition to conducting the test, they also provide educational counselling. They can explain, advise and calm emotions. PKD centres operate in all provinces. Their list is available at aids.gov.pl/pkd.

HIV can affect anyone, regardless of sex, age, orientation or lifestyle. Unfortunately, many people deny this fact and do not get tested. Every adult who has engaged in risky behaviour at least once in their life should consider taking the test. At the network of Consultation and Diagnostic Points (PKD), the test can be taken without a referral, free of charge and anonymously. Such a test can save someone’s life—or even two lives if it is taken by a pregnant woman.

Thanks to the Minister of Health’s health policy programme, Poland’s system of care for people living with HIV is considered exemplary. With effective treatment that is free of charge for patients, people can live with HIV for many years. According to the results of the latest studies, achieving an undetectable level of the virus in the blood through regular use of medication prescribed by a specialist may mean that the person will not infect their partner.

If someone has doubts or questions related to HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases, they can call the free HIV/AIDS Helpline: 800 888 448. Until the end of December, the helpline will operate around the clock. Professional consultants will answer all questions and direct callers to the appropriate specialist or for testing.
