The city council session is underway. During the session, Mayor Piotr Roman drew attention, among other things, to the demographic problems of the border region and the declining population of cities. According to the mayor, the Family 500+ Programme in Bolesławiec is not producing the expected effect in terms of increasing the birth rate.
The depopulation of cities is occurring not only in Bolesławiec, but is also visible in Zgorzelec and Jelenia Góra. Rural municipalities, known as “obwarzankowe” municipalities—that is, those surrounding cities—are gaining residents instead. In the case of Bolesławiec, this is Gmina Wiejska Bolesławiec. In the case of Zgorzelec, Gmina Wiejska Zgorzelec, and in the case of Jelenia Góra, Gmina Jeżów Sudecki. Should rural and urban municipalities therefore merge?
