Inspectors from Poczta Polska are trying to catch as many so-called television licence-fee evaders as possible. Owning an unregistered television and failing to pay the licence fee carries a fine of PLN 681, or 30 times the licence fee – reports money.pl. The website also reports that those who previously paid the licence fee and then stopped paying it face an even higher fine. In that case, the fine may amount to as much as PLN 1,500 (the total contributions for five years plus interest).
Half of the fine goes to Poczta Polska and half to the National Broadcasting Council (for public media). From January to August, inspectors had already caught more than 9,500 people who were not paying the licence fee. They were fined a total of PLN 6.5 million.
Inspections are taking place throughout Poland, and 2019 may be a record-breaking year in this respect. If the pace of inspections continues, fines will reach PLN 10 million by the end of the year.
