– I wasn’t planning this; I made the decision two weeks ago, seeing what is happening with local government budgets. This horse won’t pull any further – he explained to Paweł Wilk, host of “Rozmowa Faktów TVP3,” Bolesławiec mayor Piotr Roman, senator in spe. – What is happening at the moment is happening primarily at the expense of local government. In recent months, I think we have lost approximately PLN 6–7 million from the budget.

He added that although these are solutions beneficial to certain groups of people, local government receives no compensation for them. The mayor said:

The state, the government, every government, covers the deficit by drawing from a well called local government; this has always happened, but it has always happened within the bounds of decency. I now see that this enormous pressure for social spending comes largely from the local government budget, and at some point this may limit its development opportunities.

Why the Senate specifically?

P. Roman explained that the Senate is about legislation. – I am a practitioner; I see that laws created with good intentions by lawyers often diverge from reality – he stressed. – Everything I have done in recent years, I have done for Bolesławiec. If this succeeds [czyli jeśli prezydent wygra wybory – przyp. istotne.pl], we will be able to do more for the entire border region. Today there is a complete blockade; the parties have appropriated certain spheres.

The mayor noted that, in his opinion, the new concept of the state proposed by Law and Justice leaves no room for local government. He added that conversations with some MPs suggest there is an idea for mayors or city presidents to be elected by councils, meaning de facto by the parties. What is more, the future head of the municipality is also to be approved by the voivode.

And he emphasized: – We must defend local government.
