One of the people in the group that explored the former Wizów Chemical Works site on Saturday wrote to us about a macabre discovery.

We visited the Wizów Chemical Works. We found these skeletons near one of the water reservoirs. Before I recorded the film, we also passed several recently dead swans. It looks as if the water was contaminated to such an extent that the animals drank it and dropped dead on the spot. Someone really needs to do something about this. There are many, many more animal carcasses and bones there. These are only a few of what I saw. They all lie around one of the reservoirs containing “water” there. To my eyes, it really looks as though the animals came, drank this filth and simply dropped dead there.

We notified the relevant authorities about the matter.

As is well known, the former Wizów site was a place where chemical substances were produced and stored. It is therefore quite possible that, for example, heavy metals harmful to animals are present in the settling ponds.

The head of the Agriculture, Real Estate and Municipal Services Department at the Bolesławiec Commune Office, Jarosław Babiasz, explains:

The matter is quite complicated—primarily because of the location and the history of this facility. The site belongs to a private business owner. The body responsible for inspecting business entities for compliance with environmental protection regulations is the Voivodeship Inspectorate for Environmental Protection. The lakes around which these dead animals lie are in fact settling ponds containing waste from the technological processes of the former Wizów plants. It is therefore unsurprising that the animals may have died as a result of drinking this water. Properly securing and cleaning up the site is always the owner's responsibility.

And he adds:

It is also necessary to warn against independently “touring” such a facility—it is the site of a former chemical plant and, in addition, private property. I do not think I need to remind anyone what potential dangers and criminal penalties could result from entering such a facility without permission [podkreślenia – istotne.pl], quite apart from the dangers one could encounter there, including among the ruins of the buildings.
