On Wednesday, June 3, a meeting with Manuela Gretkowska, a novelist, screenwriter, columnist, essayist and co-founder of the Women's Party, will be held at Galeria Format (Municipal Public Library).

Gretkowska graduated in philosophy from Jagiellonian University in Kraków (during that time, she collaborated with the magazine “BruLion”). In 1988, she moved to Paris, where she studied medieval anthropology at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences.

At the beginning of the 1990s, she returned to Poland. She became deputy editor-in-chief of “Elle”, and subsequently the magazine’s literary director. She has written columns for, among others, “Cosmopolitan”, the weekly “Wprost”, “Polityka” and “Cogito”.

As a writer, she made her debut in 1991 with the novel “My zdies' emigranty”. To date, she has published, among other works, collections of short stories (“Namiętnik”, 1998), travel reportage from around the world (“Światowidz”, 1998) and columns (“Silikon”, 2000). In 2001, the writer’s remarkable book “Polka” was published. The work, a diary of the author’s pregnancy, was nominated for the Nike Literary Award.

In 2003, a joint edition of two novellas by Gretkowska and her life partner, Piotr Pietucha, was published: “Sceny z życia pozamałżeńskiego”. While “Polka” was an in-depth psycho-biological introspection, “Europejka”, published in 2004, is a kind of continuation of the writer’s pregnancy diary. Here, Gretkowska focuses on analysing external impressions and experiences; she follows the absurdities of reality, while also becoming more sensitive to the small miracles of everyday life.

The work “Kobieta i mężczyźni”, published in 2007, once again describes difficult relationships between women and men. That same year, the artist published “Na dnie nieba”, and in 2008 “Obywatelka” was released.

The meeting begins at 6:00 p.m.
