As part of its support for young creators, Bolesławiecki Ośrodek Kultury organized a screening last Thursday of films by Ivo Rachwał and Joanna Bednarczyk, as well as Przemysław Filipowicz.
The first film, “Peace – Unease,” is a short film made as part of a university assignment. Ivo Rachwał studies at the AFA Higher School of Photography in Wrocław. The film is styled after the aesthetic of Lars von Trier’s “Dogville.” Joanna Bednarczyk came up with the subject, which, as she says, can be interpreted freely. She herself thought of a woman who had lost someone close to her. Unable to cope with the situation, the protagonist creates an inner world and imagines their continued life together. In a room, within a limited and ascetic space, a woman is shown restricting herself. She creates an unsettling, hermetic world, sharing it with a cardboard male figure and an imaginary child.
It was a great pleasure to watch Joanna Bednarczyk herself, playing the leading role. She was sincere and authentic. The actress draws attention with her performance. We hope to see her on screen more often.
The second film, Przemek Filipowicz’s “8% from Nothing,” is a professional production and reflects a consistently pursued directing career. Przemek has received numerous awards at film festivals. His return to Bolesławiec and presentation of new films in his hometown is a lovely gesture.
Przemek Filipowicz could not attend the screening; he stayed in Kraków for a simultaneous premiere. Jolanta Filipowicz, the director’s mother, welcomed the guests. She emphasized that this was Przemek’s first film featuring professional actors from Kraków’s Teatr Ludowy. His crew also included graduates of I LO, such as Ewa Kozłowska, who acted in Przemek’s film; Kasia Mroczek, the production manager; and Mateusz Celmer, who wrote the film’s music together with his brother.
The story of a real-estate agent entangled in the life of a marital triangle was told excellently. It is a very good adaptation of a short story by Edgar Keret, the renowned Israeli writer, screenwriter and director. Przemek Filipowicz’s “8% from Nothing” is 100% great cinema. The short story kept viewers in suspense, aroused curiosity and contained the surreal atmosphere characteristic of Keret.
