Cardinal Henryk Gulbinowicz was a frequent guest in Bolesławiec and the surrounding area. In November 1991, the cardinal consecrated the new church on Jana Pawła II Street (then Broniewskiego Street).
In 2008, Gulbinowicz, warmly and ceremoniously welcomed by wójt Dariusz Pawliszczy, attended the “Christmas Eve of Four Cultures” in Gromadka. He presided over a Mass for the town’s residents.
The “Do Not Be Afraid” Foundation, in its report on pedophilia, names Archbishop Henryk Gulbinowicz as an accomplice of church rapists. The former metropolitan archbishop of Wrocław, now retired, allegedly helped the pedophile priest Paweł K.
Gulbinowicz is accused of standing surety for Paweł K. 14 years ago, during the prosecutorial investigation. As lawyer Krzysztof Uczkiewicz, the former defense attorney for the pedophile priest, explains, the surety was supposed to guarantee that the suspect would appear whenever summoned by law-enforcement authorities—reports Radio Wrocław. Meanwhile, thanks to the surety, the pedophile Paweł K. was transferred to Bydgoszcz, where he continued committing crimes. This is discussed in the Sekielski brothers’ widely discussed film “Tell No One.” A fragment on the subject can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/BrUvQ3W3nV4?t=5359
Cardinal Henryk Gulbinowicz may lose his title as honorary citizen of Wrocław and Lower Silesia. On May 17, representatives of the Lower Silesian Women’s Congress submitted a motion to the Wrocław City Council and the Lower Silesian Regional Assembly to revoke the title.
The 2005 case in which Henryk Gulbinowicz provided surety ended with Paweł K.’s acquittal by the court. Only after an appeal in cassation in 2010 was Paweł K. sentenced to 2.5 years in prison, suspended, for possessing child pornography. Paweł K. made headlines in 2012, when he was detained at Hotel Wrocław with a teenage boy. After a three-year investigation, the clergyman was sentenced to seven years in prison for molesting and raping minors. He also has a lifetime ban on working with children. He is still serving his sentence.
We asked the Archdiocese of Wrocław whether any inquiry had been conducted against Archbishop Gulbinowicz. Here is the Archdiocese’s response:
I am sorry, but the information you have is not true. The surety provided by Cardinal Henryk Gulbinowicz was merely an assurance from a publicly known and respected person that Kania would not tamper with the case and would appear whenever summoned by the court or prosecutor’s office. The fact that he was convicted and that his case proceeded to its conclusion without hindrance shows that this assurance was fulfilled. It is therefore difficult to conduct canonical proceedings in this matter.
