Meteorologists had forecast strong winds. And that is exactly what happened.

Between March 8 and 10, firefighters responded to 31 incidents, 14 of them caused by strong winds (12 fallen trees and, in two cases, damaged road signs).

Units from JRG Bolesławiec and volunteer firefighters from Wykroty, Warta Bolesławiecka, Gromadka, Nowogrodziec, Trzebień, Nowa Kuźnia and Czerna were dispatched to deal with the effects of the gusty winds. (A total of 18 vehicles and 85 people).

Fortunately, there was only one case involving a more serious hazard—the car struck a tree that had fallen on Jeleniogórska Street in Bolesławiec.

As we read on the website of the Komenda Powiatowa Państwowej Straży Pożarnej w Bolesławcu::

Early warnings conveyed by the media, as well as SMS notifications sent by the Government Security Centre and local-government crisis-management teams, enabled residents to prepare in advance for this weather phenomenon.

The firefighters add:

Despite the heating season coming to an end and frequent public information about the dangers associated with improper use of solid-fuel heating appliances, fire-service units extinguished chimney-soot fires five times.

This hazard could often have been avoided if chimney flues had been cleaned properly and the rules for their use had been followed—for example, by burning dry wood.
