Children playing in the snow noticed a man sitting at the top of the cross. At their request, one of the older people called the emergency services.
Two fire engines equipped with an inflatable rescue cushion and an ambulance were dispatched to the scene.
We suspect that the man who climbed onto the cross has done so several times before. Police officers are encouraging him to climb down.
Update: 11:30 p.m.
The man climbed down from the cross at 10:30 p.m., three hours after the operation began.
