The effects of the Sunday trading ban were discussed on the Wirtualna Polska program: "Money. That's What Counts" Cezary Kaźmierczak, president of the Union of Entrepreneurs and Employers. The Sunday trading ban hurt small Polish shops, Kaźmierczak assessed. In his view, the law was introduced without analyzing its potential consequences. The optimal solution for employees would not be a Sunday trading ban, but guaranteeing two Sundays off per month in the Labour Code, he added.
According to Kaźmierczak, the consequence of introducing the Sunday trading ban has been the bankruptcy of 15,000 small shops. Two major discount chains benefited the most, however. In the ZPiP president's view, these chains will probably erect monuments to Alfred Bujara and Piotr Duda (of Solidarność) for this gift.
People quickly got used to doing their big shopping on Saturdays. If the chains maintain the model of making large purchases once a week, it will mean, according to Kaźmierczak, the lasting and complete destruction of Polish retail. The ZPiP president announced a detailed report on the consequences of the Sunday trading ban. The report is to be prepared at the beginning of next year.
