The people of Siberia remember Maria most warmly; they entrusted her with caring for the memory of their difficult, painful history. In 2015, Maria Subik organised a memorable nationwide gathering for them, held in Bolesławiec and Lwówek Śląski. The meeting aimed to strengthen the memory of Poles deported to Siberia, but it also contained something more. Witnesses to history spoke with emotion about what had happened to their families. There were no dry speeches. There were memories and stories about children left behind by parents deported to Siberia, about inhuman times, human memory, dignity and survival.
Maria Subik initiated and developed fruitful cooperation with Bolesławiec senior citizens’ organisations and associations. She successfully raised funds by writing proposals for very interesting and important projects: school funding (ministerial projects), the creation of an interactive memorial room (BZWBK/Santander bank foundation), prevention programmes and a road-safety town (Ministry of the Interior), and a youth exchange with Ukraine (National Centre for Culture). The total value of the projects implemented by the lower secondary school amounted to almost PLN 1,000,000.
– The implementation of these projects was possible thanks to exemplary cooperation between teachers, students and parents – says Maria Subik. – I know education, I am a good organiser, and I would like to cooperate with everyone for whom the welfare of the child is the most important thing – adds the candidate for councillor.
As a mathematics teacher, she worked with students who achieved success in regional and national mathematics competitions. She was a finalist in the nationwide competition for school heads for the Anna Radziwiłł Award for activities supporting civil society, “School of Citizens”.
For her professional and social work, she received the Medal of the Commission of National Education and the Gold Honorary Badge for services to the Union of Siberians, and twice received an award from the Lower Silesian Superintendent of Education.
