Bulb Flowers: General Information
Bulb flowers, as their name suggests, grow from bulbs planted in the ground. There are many species, which differ in their planting and flowering times. Currently, particular attention should be paid to those planted in autumn and flowering in spring. This planting schedule means that, to bloom in spring, they must take root before the frosts arrive. These flowers include tulips, daffodils and crocuses.
Tulips: Species, Planting and Care
Tulips occur in thousands of varieties developed through human crossbreeding. Among the tulips available for sale, flowers can be found in almost every color, from white through yellow and red to dark purple. The planting period is from September to October. When choosing a site for tulips, remember that they like sunny locations. In March, when their intensive growth begins, they need nitrogen, which can be supplied with suitable fertilizers. After flowering, tulips can be left in the ground or dug up in summer and replanted in autumn.
Daffodils: Species, Planting and Care
The most popular daffodils are yellow, and this variety is called jonquils. There are also varieties with white, orange and pink petals. The optimal time to plant these flowers is from the end of August to the end of September. Daffodils like moist soil, so they should be watered regularly in spring during growth. Daffodils are perennial flowers and can successfully grow in a given location for as long as four years. They need to be dug up only when their flowers begin to become noticeably smaller.
Crocuses: Species, Planting and Care
Crocuses are bulb flowers that occur in purple, blue, yellow and white. Around 30 species are cultivated as ornamental plants. One species, the saffron crocus, is used to produce the spice saffron. Spring-flowering varieties are planted throughout September and begin flowering early, as soon as the beginning of the following year’s early spring. Remember to water them, as they do not tolerate drought well. Like daffodils, they are perennial.
All three of the flower species mentioned will be a wonderful, multicolored garden decoration. For this reason, it is worth deciding to plant at least a few of them when planning a garden.
