What are haemorrhoids?
Haemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anus. In the final section of the large intestine, namely the rectum, there are veins located relatively close beneath the mucous membrane. Under the influence of various factors, the blood vessels in the anus may become enlarged. As a result, they become hypersensitive. Haemorrhoidal lumps, as haemorrhoids are also called, are unfortunately painful. They may also itch and burn. It often happens that they make it virtually impossible to sit in one place.
Haemorrhoids most often appear in people over 30 and are a common ailment. They affect women after pregnancy, as well as people who lead a sedentary lifestyle, are overweight, frequently suffer from constipation, have circulatory insufficiency or are elderly. Haemorrhoids are also a condition affecting cyclists, horse riders and professional drivers. Because of their location, piles are an embarrassing ailment. However, remember that if you experience pain around the anus, it is better to see a doctor who will examine you thoroughly and recommend appropriate treatment.
Haemorrhoid preparations
Is there one effective medicine for haemorrhoids? Haemorrhoids are treated mainly symptomatically, and complications are prevented. Therefore, haemorrhoid tablets, haemorrhoid cream, haemorrhoid ointment and haemorrhoid suppositories are primarily intended to relieve the troublesome pain that occurs especially when sitting or having a bowel movement.
Over-the-counter haemorrhoid medicines may contain substances that strengthen the walls of the veins, thereby reducing haemorrhoid symptoms. Such substances may include diosmin or rutoside, for example. An over-the-counter haemorrhoid ointment containing lidocaine hydrochloride may also have pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects.
In cases of advanced haemorrhoids, a doctor may recommend surgical removal of the lumps from the anus. However, bear in mind that haemorrhoids may recur, and the procedure may need to be repeated or new haemorrhoids treated preventively.
Home remedies for haemorrhoids
Haemorrhoid preparations are one thing. When treating piles, personal hygiene and an appropriate diet are also very important. How should you maintain hygiene when haemorrhoids are troubling you? Ointments for this condition may have not only pain-relieving but also disinfecting effects. Remember to wash yourself every day with suitable intimate hygiene products, preferably those intended for people with haemorrhoids. You can also take disinfecting herbal sitz baths, for example with oak bark or chamomile.
A light diet that does not cause constipation will also help you deal with the symptoms caused by haemorrhoids. Such a diet should be rich in fibre, which improves digestion and bowel movements. A haemorrhoid diet should include dried fruit, green vegetables and an adequate amount of fluids, preferably water, to soften the stool. In turn, it is recommended to avoid heavy, fatty foods and legumes.
Remember that haemorrhoids are difficult to cure completely. You can only relieve their troublesome symptoms. If you have a problem with piles, it is better to see a doctor and not be ashamed to admit to the condition. A specialist will advise you which haemorrhoid preparations will work most effectively and quickly. Only then will you regain your comfort.
