Military service was immensely important to Him. He proudly wore a uniform with white-and-red flags on the shoulders and a beret bearing an eagle—the symbol of freedom and independence. When he first put on the uniform, he knew that it entailed enormous responsibility.

The price he paid for his courage and sacrifice was enormously high.

For all the soldiers of the 10th Armored Cavalry Brigade, Lieutenant Łukasz Kurowski will forever remain a symbol and testimony to the fact that, when necessary, a Polish soldier is ready to make the ultimate sacrifice in the name of higher goals.

The officer of the 24th Uhlan Battalion went on eternal watch on August 14, 2007. Since then, the soldiers of the 10th Armored Cavalry Brigade have paid due tribute and respect to the soldier from the armored brigade.

Lieutenant Łukasz Kurowski was the first Polish soldier to die in Afghanistan. On August 14, 2007, a military patrol set out from Gardez in eastern Afghanistan as usual. Approximately twenty kilometers from the base, it came under fire from the Taliban. A regular battle broke out, during which a grenade launcher round exploded at the feet of the platoon commander, Second Lieutenant Łukasz Kurowski. The wounded officer was immediately transported to the American Wilderness base. He received medical care, but despite the doctors’ efforts, he could not be saved.

The cavalrymen from Świętoszów do not forget

On the anniversary of Lieutenant Łukasz Kurowski’s death, a delegation of soldiers visited the fallen soldier’s grave to lay a wreath and light a candle as a token of gratitude for His devoted service. During the brigade’s weekly assembly, the soldiers observed a minute of silence in memory of their comrade. Flowers were also laid beneath the memorial plaque at the Square of Soldiers of the 10th Armored Cavalry Brigade Fallen in Polish Military Contingents.

In the person of Lieutenant Łukasz Kurowski, the Świętoszów unit and the Polish Armed Forces lost a soldier by vocation. He flew to Afghanistan to help the Afghan people establish the foundations for a democratic and dignified life. His tragic death prevented Him from seeing the results of His work, but the soldiers continue His mission. The fallen officer’s family can be proud of Him. In defense of peace, Lieutenant Łukasz Kurowski sacrificed what was most precious to Him: his own life.

Honor His Memory!
