Which radiator is best suited to an apartment?
Considering the method of installation, we distinguish two basic types of radiators:
- wall-mounted radiators – these are traditional solutions whose characteristic feature is that they remain visible, which may not appeal to everyone. Nevertheless, currently manufactured models feature interesting designs. They can therefore become a unique interior decoration. Steel panel radiators are considered the most popular models among wall-mounted radiators. Their characteristic feature is an attractive appearance determined by their smooth surface. This has another advantage: it makes the radiator easy to clean. Profiled steel sheet is usually used in their production. To make them resistant to mechanical damage and corrosion, they are covered on the outside with a protective layer, such as anticorrosion primer and powder coating. A radiator of this type is equipped with a decorative upper grille, side covers, components that allow the model to be hung on the wall, and an air vent. The radiator can be connected from the side, either on the right or left. Some variants can also be connected from below. When installing a steel panel radiator beneath a window, we must remember to maintain the appropriate installation dimensions. As a rule, the distance between the radiator and the windowsill and floor should be at least 100 mm. There is, however, an exception to this rule. The distance may be reduced to 70 mm provided that the radiator output is 5–10% lower.
- trench radiators – these are an interesting alternative to traditional wall-mounted radiators. Their greatest advantage is that they remain invisible. They therefore have no impact on the interior design. They are an excellent solution when choosing large glazed areas near which wall-mounted radiators cannot be installed. In that case, they protect against an influx of cold air from outside. A trench radiator is placed in a recess within the floor layers, meaning that, as mentioned, it remains invisible. It therefore does not limit the space or determine the design of the rooms. What is more, this type of radiator can be placed directly in front of doors leading to a terrace or balcony without obstructing access to them. For an attractive overall appearance, the top of the trench radiator is covered with a grille. Depending on our needs, it can be made of wood, stainless steel, or aluminum in a wide range of colors, making it easier to match the radiator to the later interior design. This is important if we do not want the radiator to stand out.
So which solution should you choose? Trench radiators are usually installed in modern buildings characterized by extensive glazing, which makes it difficult to position wall-mounted radiators appropriately. They are therefore suitable for modern apartments and houses equipped with spacious glass terrace and balcony doors. In classic buildings, standard wall-mounted radiators will be the better choice. They provide optimal thermal comfort.
An unquestionable advantage of trench radiators is that they work with every type of flooring, including wooden surfaces, which distinguishes them from underfloor heating. Another benefit of installing trench radiators is that they do not cause windows to fog up.
What is more, a trench radiator can also be equipped with an additional fan, thereby increasing the efficiency of the entire system. This makes it possible to use trench heating as the sole method of heating rooms.
The Aesthetics of the Chosen Solutions
Since radiators are among the most visible elements of a heating system, especially wall-mounted models, when choosing them it is worth paying attention primarily to their appearance. By choosing a decorative radiator, we gain not only practical benefits but also emphasize the character and style of the interior.
What is more, this solution eliminates the need to use covers. This provides easy access to the heat source, which is particularly important in a bathroom, laundry room, or toilet. The wide range of decorative radiators available on the market is also significant. It includes products differing in shape, form, size, and color, so we are sure to find a model perfectly suited not only to our preferences but also to the design of a given interior.
When choosing a decorative radiator, it is worth paying attention to its style. Modern models, currently enjoying the greatest popularity, will not necessarily work in every room. Sometimes retro-style radiators will be a better solution. They work particularly well in minimalist industrial and vintage interiors.
In conclusion, the type of radiator we choose depends primarily on the type of glazing in our house or apartment. If we are planning a large number of glass doors, it is worth considering a trench heating system. If, on the other hand, we prefer standard solutions, we should opt for classic wall-mounted radiators. Each of these solutions has its advantages and disadvantages.
