The Legnica-Głogów Copper District will have convenient rail connections that are competitive with road transport, as well as more efficient freight transport. Nine stations and stops will be renovated. The project is worth PLN 200 million.
The investment will restore—after nearly a decade—passenger services between the most important towns of the Copper Basin. Once the project is completed, passenger trains will travel at speeds of up to 120 km/h, while freight trains will travel at up to 80 km/h. This will significantly shorten travel times and increase the line’s capacity.
A new station for Lubin residents
Work on the railway line has been divided into two stages. Since March, the contractor has been working on the 20-kilometre section from Legnica to Lubin. The reconstruction of the station is a key element. Four tracks and turnouts have already been dismantled. Construction of a new platform is underway. Ultimately, two new island platforms, each 200 metres long, will be built there. The structures will be moved closer to the street, and their height of 76 cm will make boarding trains more convenient. The platforms will be equipped with new lighting and information boards. People with reduced mobility will gain easy access to trains. A new Lubin-Stadion stop, located approximately 1.5 km from the station, will encourage people to use the railway. Work related to its construction is scheduled to continue until March 2019.
Reconstruction of Raszówka station
The reconstruction of Raszówka station is an important part of the first stage of the work. Following the demolition of the platforms, earthworks and drainage construction are underway. New signalling equipment will ensure better management of train traffic.
Most of the work related to the overhead catenary has been completed between Legnica and Lubin. The old track has been dismantled over a length of 10 km. Platforms are being reconstructed at the stations and stops in Rzeszotary, Raszówka, Gorzelin and Chróstnik. Work is being carried out on 12 engineering structures, including the bridge over the Czarna Woda. Completion of the work on the Legnica–Lubin Górniczy section is planned for the end of October. Freight services will be restored by the end of the year.
In Koźlice, trains will run beneath the tracks
The next stage of the Lubin–Rudna project is planned for October. Its most important element will be the construction of a railway overpass in Koźlice, which will replace the level crossing. This solution will ensure fast, collision-free road traffic and safer train operations. The overpass will have platforms equipped with lifts. The second stage of the work includes the renovation of tracks, the overhead catenary, stops and stations. Completion of the investment is planned for July 2019.
An important benefit of the line’s reconstruction for passengers will be new platforms at five stops: Rzeszotary, Gorzelin, Chróstnik, Rynarcice and Rudna-Miasto, and four stations: Raszówka, Lubin Górniczy, Koźlice and Rudna Gwizdanów. All of them will be equipped with shelters, benches and lighting.
The scope of the work includes the demolition and reconstruction of 27 engineering structures. Twenty-five bridges and overpasses will be renovated. Safety will be improved through the reconstruction of 16 level crossings and the modernisation of the traffic control system.
Line No. 289 is a “link” between the E30 main line from Medyka to Zgorzelec—from Poland’s eastern to western border—and Line No. 273, known as the Nadodrzanka, from Wrocław to Szczecin. The investment will improve freight rail traffic in south-western Poland.
