Arek Kukawski from Milików is a first-year student at the lower secondary school in Nowogrodziec. He has had neither hands nor feet since birth. He gets around using heavy, poorly fitted prostheses. He covers the long route from home to school on foot or by bicycle.
Despite his disability, Arek plays football, writes without anyone’s help and operates a computer. He needs only arm and leg prostheses to become fully independent. Their purchase will cost PLN 90,000. Both the lower secondary school students, the school’s administration and staff, and the students’ parents, graduates and other people of goodwill joined the “Helping Arek” campaign. Money for the young resident of Milików was collected during the school’s St Andrew’s celebrations and a carnival dance organized by class I e. The Catholic “Light–Life Movement” group raised PLN 900 for Arek, while more than PLN 500 was collected at a sale of greeting cards made by students of the Nowogrodziec lower secondary school.
The campaign’s largest event was a charity concert held on Sunday, 22 February, in the auditorium of the Primary School in Nowogrodziec. The audience had the opportunity to see, among other things, a performance entitled “Little Red Riding Hood Looking for the Prince,” a medieval warriors’ combat display and a dance performance. The Ami, Melizmat, Shadows Przemek & Bartek and Kiara & Ola groups also performed on stage.
The teachers from the Nowogrodziec Lower Secondary School caused a real sensation by performing songs by the famous Swedish group “Abba”.
The concert’s total proceeds amounted to more than PLN 5,000. By 3 March, approximately PLN 7,500 had been paid into Arek’s account.
