There were certainly several matters worth mentioning in the third week of May, including the police apprehending the perpetrator of a series of thefts and burglaries in Bolesławiec County. Yet—in the bustle of everyday life—the death of Józef Burniak became the most important event.

In my column, I recall the article “Burniak: I will vote for Komorowski,” published in our pages in 2010. The former councillor and mayor, who helped create the young democracy in Bolesławiec after 1989, knew what threatened it and, above all, who threatened it.

Grażyna Hanaf, a resident of Bolesławiec, an art historian by education, a journalist for the regional istotne.pl portal and newspaper, author of three fairy tales (Garbuska, The Box Girl, The Missing Parents) and two novels (Joachim and Joachim’s Revenge), as well as Polish- and French-language travel guides to Morocco and Provence (ExpressMap publishing house); a lecturer for New Horizons Film Education (2008–20015), she created and led educational film projects for young people as a visual arts instructor and cultural animator (2005–2006), and founded the Film Discussion Club in Bolesławiec (2005).
