At the initiative of the owners of Agora bookshop, a meeting with Dr Jan A. Choroszy, editor, employee of the Institute of Polish Philology at the University of Wrocław, and author of the study “Our Father – Ours. Translations, Paraphrases and Other Literary Studies of the Lord’s Prayer” will be held on Saturday, February 28, at the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Bolesławiec.
The book contains 499 texts (translations, paraphrases and travesties of the prayer), more than 40 melodies for songs and over 200 illustrations. “The Lord’s Prayer, also known as the daily prayer, has led and continues to lead its own life in culture, marked by history and politics, theology and ideology, solemnity and laughter, faith and blasphemy, hope and despair, piety and hatred. Its history continues to intersect and intertwine with human experience, with individual and collective fate, with life and death. [...] The collection Our Father – Ours provides an extensive picture of how—without ever becoming flesh—the word of Jesus came to dwell among us” (from the publisher’s note).
Choroszy will be accompanied by Prof. Stanisław Bereś from the Institute of Journalism and Social Communication at the University of Wrocław. The meeting will be enhanced by a performance from Marek Pilch (organ) and Maria Zygmaniak-Lesiak (soprano), who will perform Polish Our Father songs from the 16th–19th centuries.
The event begins at 7:00 p.m.
