On November 10, 2017, a serious heart defect was detected in little Oliwia from Lubań: the absence of the septum between the atria, known as ASD II. In other words, her little heart has a large defect—a hole. During fetal development, the septum that would separate the heart chambers did not form. The cardiologist informed her parents that immediate open-heart surgery was necessary.

Because the waiting time for such a procedure in Poland is becoming terribly long, and Oliwia is growing weaker by the day, her parents decided to save their child’s life abroad. In Kraków, they managed to consult an outstanding pediatric cardiac surgeon, who stressed that the operation was necessary as soon as possible. He referred the girl to a clinic in Münster, Germany, because such a serious heart defect impairs the child’s proper development, contributes to being underweight combined with a lack of appetite and rapid fatigue, and also carries the risk of pulmonary hypertension.

At present, blood from the left ventricle is constantly mixing with blood in the right ventricle, causing severe oxygen deprivation in the heart and other organs, including the brain, liver, kidneys and intestines. In addition, Oliwia’s heart beats irregularly; she has high blood pressure and tachycardia.

It is crucial that the operation take place immediately to prevent irreversible damage, including enlargement of the left ventricle, as well as pulmonary hypertension and damage that would permanently affect the function of her heart and Oliwia’s life. The operation costs €20,000. Her parents cannot afford this expense.
