During Thursday’s session of the Youth City Council, it turned out that the young people were not complying with the law. The matter concerned personnel changes in the council’s composition. A new councillor appeared at the session, replacing another who was resigning her mandate. The new councillor took her seat among the others completely spontaneously.
The young people thought that relinquishing a mandate and asking a friend to serve as a replacement until the end of the term would be enough for everything to be in order. They were completely unaware that electoral regulations applied to them. These clearly state that, if a councillor resigns a mandate, a by-election must be held.
During the session, it also turned out that another person, who was not present at the meeting, wanted to leave the Council. The councillors felt hurt by this declaration and themselves want to expel the councillor.
Despite their lack of knowledge about their own activities, the young councillors intend to encourage young people to take an active role in local government. “We want to carry out even more initiatives to help people in need, as well as run a campaign concerning local government,” says Arkadiusz Krzemiński, chairman of the Youth City Council. “We want students to be able to exercise the rights to which they are entitled,” the council chairman adds.
