The aim of the training was to improve the skills of the personnel of the regiment and battalion command posts in planning, organizing and directing military operations in combat, as well as in carrying out activities related to the preparation and organization of firing and fire direction. The training also provided an opportunity to integrate rocket and self-propelled artillery battalions in carrying out live-fire missions as part of the regiment, in accordance with the applicable firing programme requirements.
After the inaugural assembly, during which the participants were briefed on the subject and objectives of the training and received instructions for training at the exercise area, the commanders of the participating subunits and the personnel of the regiment’s Command Post took part in a mission briefing that concluded with the assignment of tasks through the delivery of combat orders.
After reaching marching readiness, the participating subunits moved on the “Avalanche” signal to the Żagań Training Area (Świętoszów direction), where they occupied their designated initial areas. Further activity against the background of the tactical situation adopted for the training involved carrying out tactical and fire missions as part of the division’s fire support.
Reservists performing short-term military exercises trained within the artillery subunits and the staffs of the regiment and battalions. The fire direction training with live ammunition enabled them to improve their skills in their assigned positions and functions under conditions resembling combat.
During the Nawała-17 Fire Direction Training, the batteries of the 3rd Rocket Artillery Battalion (122 mm WR-40 Langusta) and the 1st Self-Propelled Artillery Battalion (152 mm DANA self-propelled howitzers) carried out missions from concealed firing positions during the day and at night.
The training conducted by the commander of the 23rd Artillery Regiment, Col. Paweł Świtalski, was attended by the chief of the Rocket and Artillery Forces of the 11th “Lubusz” Armoured Cavalry Division, Col. Mirosław Misior, who observed the Bolesławiec artillerymen carrying out their fire missions.
All projectiles hit their targets with the required accuracy, while the good and very good grades achieved under the demanding training standards demonstrated the battalions’ high level of training.
The Fire Direction Training tested the current level of preparation for the regiment’s most important activities in 2017. It made it possible to assess the subunits’ readiness to carry out fire-support missions using live ammunition, as well as the readiness of the regiment’s staffs and subunits to participate in the Dragon-17 exercise with troops and in the evaluation Fire Direction Training conducted by the commander of the 11th Armoured Cavalry Division during the tactical exercise with troops codenamed Borsuk-17.
