The incident occurred in October last year. As we read on the tvn24.pl website:
[…] Germans arrived in the small town of Lubomierz. Under cover of night, they appeared by one of the trees. They were looking for family heirlooms. They had a map but had forgotten a spade. So they knocked on the door of one of the residents. They asked to borrow equipment with which they could dig up the ground. The resident notified the police. The police thwarted the Germans’ plans.
The Germans showed the officers a letter stating that they were descendants of a gardener who had once lived in Liebenthal, today’s Lubomierz. The casket contained necklaces, bracelets, rings, cufflinks and other ornaments. Some were gold and others silver. Most were set with precious stones.
The casket first went to an official safe. Now, after many months of efforts by the town authorities, its contents can be admired at the Monastery Museum in Lubomierz. The value of the treasure is not yet known. More information is available in the tvn24.pl report.
