The proud owner of this remarkable plant is Mr. Stanisław from Nowogrodziec, a member of the Nowogrodziec Volunteer Fire Service. The flowering process of the 37-year-old agave, planted by Mr. Stanisław’s mother, began at the start of May. The flower itself grew for about two weeks. It is now approximately 1.5 metres tall, while the entire plant, measured from the ground, is 6.6 metres high.
The buds at the bottom are already fading, the middle ones are flowering, and the upper ones have yet to open. When the entire flower has finished blooming, the plant... will die.
Why do we believe this is an important topic—despite the haters and internet trolls? As we read on the e-ogrodek.pl:
Agaves originate from Mexico, but they have now also spread across southern Europe. During holiday trips to the Mediterranean region, one can spot enormous, several-metre-high stems bearing flat, yellow umbels. From a distance, they resemble bizarre lanterns—and these are flowering agaves. Unfortunately, agaves do not bloom until after several decades; moreover, an individual plant flowers only once and then dies.
The powerful plant was not deterred by the storms that recently passed over our county and broke many trees. What is more, the Nowogrodziec agave has become quite a tourist attraction.
It is also worth adding that Mr. Stanisław has another agave that is two or three years younger. Will this one bloom soon too? We certainly hope so! And we are keeping our fingers crossed!
