A resident of Nowogrodziec wrote to us: “This agave has bloomed in Nowogrodziec. A fascinating specimen grown in a pot. And I know that agaves die after flowering.” And indeed. As we read on the e-ogrodek.pl website:

Agaves originate from Mexico, but they have now also spread across southern Europe. During holiday trips to the Mediterranean region, one can see enormous, several-metre-high stems bearing flat, yellow umbels. From a distance, they resemble bizarre lanterns – these are flowering agaves. Unfortunately, agaves do not bloom until after several decades; moreover, a given plant flowers only once and then dies.

The fortunate owner of this unusual plant is Mr Stanisław from Nowogrodziec, a member of the Nowogrodziec Volunteer Fire Service. “This agave has not bloomed yet, but it is getting close,” the Nowogrodziec resident clarifies.

The flowering process has been under way since the beginning of May. It is not yet known when the agave will be possible to admire in full bloom. According to the owner of the “fascinating specimen”, it may happen in a week or in a month. The 37-year-old plant, planted by Mr Stanisław’s mother, is already 6.5 metres tall.

It is worth adding that Mr Stanisław has another agave, two or three years younger. Will this one also bloom soon? We hope so! We are keeping our fingers crossed!

We will return to this story.
