On 1 June, a mass public reading event was held at the athletics stadium of the Henryk Sucharski Comprehensive and Vocational School Complex in Bolesławiec under the slogan “How I Don’t Read, How I Do,” with more than 450 people taking part. (The aims of the event, which took the form of a reading picnic, included initiating a trend for reading, integrating local communities interested in activities supporting the development of reading, promoting libraries, and emphasizing their importance for reading education.)
At 10:00 a.m., the participants and organizers of the event were welcomed at the Orlik sports field beside ZSOiZ by Laura Słocka-Przydróżna, headmistress of the Comprehensive and Vocational School Complex in Bolesławiec, who warmly introduced the co-organizers of Thursday’s event: the Library of the Władysław Broniewski I General Secondary School and the Pedagogical Library in Bolesławiec.
The meeting with books began with supervisors from the individual schools and libraries reading excerpts from “Heart of Darkness” during the Year of Joseph Conrad Korzeniowski. Next, the students formed the word “CZYTAMY” on the stadium field and settled down to read the books they had brought with them. Some read books from their home collections (and had the opportunity to receive a special stamp prepared for the occasion by the Pedagogical Library in Bolesławiec), while others read books from the school library. Some participants chose texts from their textbooks—everyone read whatever they felt like.
The next item was a competition for the best costume portraying a literary character. The students demonstrated exceptional creativity, and the jury had a difficult decision to make. Several of the best costumes were selected from among the dozen or so participants. First place went to a student who portrayed Cruella de Vil from “101 Dalmatians.” The winners received small gifts in the form of books and bookmarks prepared by the Organizers.
