On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Poland regaining independence, ceremonies commemorating this historic event were held at the Sanctuary of the Assumption of the Mother of God and in the Market Square. The Independence Day celebrations began with an address by Dean Andrzej Jarosiewicz, who welcomed the faithful gathered at the Sanctuary.
He was followed by Bolesławiec County Head Cezary Przybylski. Among other things, the County Head spoke about how independence should be understood in an era of open European Union borders.
The next item on the celebrations’ program was the artistic performance “Roads to Independence.” Young people sang patriotic songs. After the performance, an honor company of the 23rd Silesian Artillery Brigade arrived at the Sanctuary, along with flag-bearing units representing veterans, scouts, the military, the Solidarność trade union and students from Bolesławiec secondary schools. The solemn mass was celebrated by Dean Stanisław Kusik.
After the mass, the military honor company and the flag-bearing units marched around the Market Square. At 12:40, the roll call of the fallen began. The roll call was read by Maj. Jerzy Juchaniuk. To conclude the ceremony, soldiers fired a ceremonial volley in honor of all those who died fighting for a free Poland.
